What a Personal Loan May Legally Cost in South Africa
Every charge on a personal loan is capped by the National Credit Act 34 of 2005. These are the maximums any NCR-registered lender may charge:
| Charge | NCA maximum |
|---|---|
| Interest (unsecured credit) | Repo rate + 21% per year |
| Once-off initiation fee | R165 + 10% of the amount above R1,000 (capped) |
| Monthly service fee | R69 per month (incl. VAT) |
| Credit life insurance | R4.50 per R1,000 of the outstanding balance |
The calculator above applies the initiation fee and service fee automatically, so the monthly instalment you see reflects the real cost — not just interest.
Understanding Your Loan Costs
Interest Rate
Your interest rate depends on your credit profile, loan amount, and term. Rates range from 5% to roughly 29% per annum as regulated by the National Credit Act. The rate shown in the calculator is indicative and your actual rate will be confirmed during the application process.
Initiation Fee
A once-off initiation fee is charged when you take out a new loan. This fee is regulated by the NCA and is calculated based on your loan amount. The initiation fee can be added to your loan balance and repaid over the term of the loan — the calculator finances it this way.
Monthly Service Fee
A monthly service fee is charged for the administration of your loan account. This fee is regulated by the NCA and is currently capped at R69 per month including VAT.
Total Repayment
The total repayment is the full amount you will pay over the life of the loan, including the principal, interest, initiation fee, and all service fees. Open the month-by-month repayment schedule in the calculator to see exactly how each instalment splits between interest and capital.
Representative Example
Borrowing R20,000 over 24 months at an indicative rate of 24% p.a.: once-off initiation fee of R2,065 (financed), monthly service fee of R69. Monthly instalment about R1,236; total repayable roughly R29,654, of which about R5,933 is interest and R3,721 is fees. Figures are estimates — your credit agreement quote will show the exact amounts.
Personal Loan Calculator FAQ
Monthly repayments are calculated with the standard amortization formula: the loan amount (plus the financed initiation fee) is repaid in equal instalments that cover interest on the outstanding balance plus a portion of the capital, with the NCA monthly service fee added on top. Our personal loan calculator does this for you — set the amount and term and it shows the monthly instalment, total interest, and total cost instantly.
The National Credit Act caps interest on unsecured credit at the repo rate plus 21% per year. With the current repo rate that works out to roughly 28–29% per annum. Your actual rate depends on your credit profile — borrowers with a good credit score pay significantly less than the maximum.
Three charges are regulated by the National Credit Act: a once-off initiation fee (R165 plus 10% of the amount above R1,000, subject to a cap), a monthly service fee capped at R69 including VAT, and credit life insurance capped at R4.50 per R1,000 of the outstanding balance on unsecured loans. Any other charge on a personal loan is not permitted.
Registered credit providers typically offer personal loans from R500 up to R250,000 (some up to R350,000) over terms from a few months to 72 months. The amount you qualify for depends on the affordability assessment every NCR-registered lender must perform: your income, expenses, and existing debt obligations.
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser — no credit check is performed, nothing is recorded at the credit bureaus, and you do not need to provide any personal information to use it.
A shorter term means a higher monthly instalment but much less interest overall; a longer term lowers the instalment but increases the total cost, because interest and the monthly service fee run for longer. Use the term slider to compare: for example, R20,000 repaid over 12 months instead of 36 can save thousands of rand in interest and fees.
Lenders use risk-based pricing: the interest rate you are offered depends on your credit history, income stability, and the criteria of each lender. The calculator uses indicative rates within the NCA limits. Treat the result as a realistic estimate, then compare real offers before signing — the credit agreement quote will show the exact instalment.
