Credit Ombud

The Credit Ombud is an independent dispute resolution body in South Africa that handles complaints between consumers and non-bank credit providers — such as micro-lenders, retailers offering store credit, and debt collectors. If you have a complaint about a registered credit provider and cannot resolve it directly with them, you can escalate to the Credit Ombud at no cost. The Ombud investigates and issues binding rulings. For complaints against banks specifically, the Banking Ombudsman (OBSSA) handles those cases instead. The Credit Ombud’s services are free to consumers and are an important part of the NCA’s consumer protection framework.

Usage Examples

"If a lender refuses to remove a paid-up debt from your credit record, you can file a complaint with the Credit Ombud."
