POPIA

POPIA
South Africa's data protection law (Protection of Personal Information Act, Act 4 of 2013). When you apply for credit, lenders collect your personal info — name, ID, income details. POPIA says they must protect it, use it only for the purpose you agreed to, and let you access it.

Usage Examples

"Bongani applied for a Capitec loan online and got asked for his ID number, income, and banking details. Under POPIA, Capitec had to protect that data, couldn't sell it to other lenders, and had to let him request it back. He could also demand they delete it."

"Thandi's lender shared her credit application details with a debt counselling company without asking. That breached POPIA. She reported them and got compensation. Lenders can't just sell your info around."

"Andile registered for debt review and signed a POPIA consent form allowing his debt counsellor to contact his creditors. Without that consent, they couldn't legally share his personal details with banks. The law protects your privacy."
